26 Yamaha consoles help SIS Live broadcast Commonwealth Games to the world

Oct,2010

With the 19th Commonwealth Games under way in Delhi, the world’s attention has now thankfully switched away from the pre-event concerns to the most important matter - the sport itself. Being broadcast for the first time in high definition, 26 Yamaha LS9 consoles are being used by outside broadcast specialists SIS LIVE to ensure that the televised audio is every bit as good as the images.

SIS LIVE is Europe’s largest outside broadcast and satellite uplink provider and is supplying production / coverage facilities and services to cover the Games. The company won the multi-million pound contract from India’s public broadcaster, Doordarshan, part of Prasar Bharati, the Broadcasting Corporation of India.

Taking delivery of the 26 LS9-32 consoles from SSE Audio Group, SIS LIVE is using YG2/YS2 mini-YGDAI cards, also supplied by SSE, to seamlessly integrate the consoles with a huge Optocore network. The system is bringing 17 different track and field events from 12 different venues to a global television audience, as well as the lavish opening and closing ceremonies.

The network was designed by SIS LIVE sound supervisor Andy James, with Optocore’s multiple console emulation mode allowing up to four different LS9s to control various devices on the network, while the system also provides a fully redundant audio network for all the broadcast audio and monitoring requirements.

The LS9’s combination of small size and light weight, yet delivering advanced features, excellent sound quality and, above all, reliability made it the ideal choice for multiple units to be flown halfway around the world and reliably deliver the performance levels that the company’s exacting standards demand.

“Reliability is absolutely fundamental to any broadcast project and the Indian climate is well-known for being both very hot and very wet,” says Karl Christmas, Deputy General Manager of Yamaha Commercial Audio, UK.

“It is a challenging project for any audio equipment and we are extremely pleased that SIS LIVE chose the LS9-32 to fulfil such a vital role in the global broadcast of the Commonwealth Games.”
