Another Step Forward for Live Sound Evolution: CL/QL Version 4.0 Ready for April Release

Apr, 2016

April 4, 2016. Shizuoka, Japan – CL series digital mixing consoles have taken their place as a new industry standard, and the compact all-in-one QL series digital mixing consoles are highly regarded in a wide range of applications. Firmware update V4.0 for both series is ready for release, offering new features and enhanced operation.

A year has passed since firmware update V3.0 augmented the CL and QL consoles with advanced surround and broadcast functionality. The impending V4.0 update takes another leap forward with new EQ algorithms, a new Premium Rack device, and other features that raise live sound support to an even higher level. The StageMix application for iPad and related software will be updated at the same time. This update will further expand the range of applications for which the CL and QL consoles are suited, with enhanced creative freedom and operability.

The CL/QL V4.0 firmware update will be available for download from the Yamaha Pro Audio website by the end of April.

Main New Features in CL/QL V4.0

  • New “Precise,” “Aggressive,” and “Smooth” Channel EQ Algorithms
The three channel EQ algorithms that are included in the flagship RIVAGE PM10 digital mixing system are now in the CL/QL V4.0 firmware! The “Precise” algorithm offers surgical precision for pinpoint frequency control, “Aggressive” delivers musical response with a wide control range, and “Smooth” allows smooth, natural sounding response adjustments while keeping the sonic nuances of the source intact. The “Precise” algorithm includes a Q parameter that makes use of overshoot for flexible control.
  • New “MBC4” Premium Rack Device
The MBC4 is a four-band multiband compressor that combines a GUI refined to offer outstanding operability and visibility with advanced VCM modeling for high overall performance. The musical response of analog compressors was studied in depth and recreated in detail in the MBC4 gain reduction circuit, allowing flexible dynamics processing while retaining the integrity and musicality of the source.
  • Control & Monitoring for Shure ULXD4D and ULXD4Q Digital Wireless Receivers
Shure ULXD4D and ULXD4Q channel name entry, receiver gain and mute control, plus monitoring of receiver gain, mute, frequency, diversity, battery RF strength, and audio level are now available via the CL and QL series touch displays.
  • Solo Mode
The CUE keys can now be used to control input and output solo functions for smoother line checks and other procedures.
  • Second Cue Bus
This new option allows the MATRIX 7/8 bus to be used as a CUE B bus so that, for example, in-ear monitors and wedges can be monitored via separate CUE buses. The separate CUE buses can be accessed via the console (FOH) controls or remotely via the Editor or StageMix application (Monitor).
  • MonitorMix iPhone Application Support
MonitorMix is an application for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch that, with CL/QL V4.0, allows wireless control of send levels to the mix bus. Up to ten devices running MonitorMix can be used simultaneously, providing a convenient way for individual performers to adjust their own monitor mix. In that application the performers only have control of their own mix bus so personal adjustments won’t affect the mix heard by other performers.
  • Scrollable DCA Roll-Out (CL only)
When channels assigned to a DCA group are “rolled out” to a console fader bank but the number of assigned channels exceeds the number of available faders, it is now possible to use a channel encoder to scroll through the channels.
  • GEQ Control from Touch & Turn Knobs
The gain of the GEQ band specified via the touch screen and Touch & Turn knobs can now be adjusted while the faders are being used for DCA or channel control.
  • CL/QL Editor Reads and Writes CSV Files
The CL/QL Editor can now read and write CSV files containing channel name, icon, color, and patch information. This makes it possible to prepare or edit the data offline using a standard spreadsheet or text editor program.
  • Tio1608-D Head Amp Control
The head amplifiers in the Tio1608-D I/O Rack for TF series digital mixing consoles can now be controlled from CL and QL consoles, making it possible to combine the Tio1608-D with the Rio3224-D and Rio1608-D I/O Racks.

A number of other new features are included.

New Features in CL/QL StageMix V6.0

  • Effect Editing
Effect parameters that could previously only be edited via the CL or QL series console itself can now be edited using the StageMix application. A new easy-to-use graphical user interface for the reverb and delay effects is also included.

“Firmware update V4.0 expands the expressive potential of CL and QL series consoles. Some of the new features extend to other parts of the system as well, notably the StageMix app and Shure ULX-D digital wireless components, enhancing operability of the entire system” notes Yamaha Pro Audio Business Unit Director Ken Hiraoka. “Yamaha will continue to listen and respond to customer feedback in order to provide the best possible working environments for a wide range of applications.”
